Us & Them

Our second client assignment was a bit more tough this time. We were given the task of depicting a book cover. The book was entitled 'Us & Them' and is about the history of intolerance in America. My intention behind this was to have several words that described intolerance and had negative connotation and to have my subject ripping through them. It was my first time working with first year photography student Eric Waters, thank you for your help!

I see that your ad is depicting a young man breaking though racism and intolerance. It reminds me of a windows icon for racism. It does not accurately manifest racism as it is experienced in our society. It is unacceptable to be racist. Almost no one walks around accusing other people of being racist or making blatently racist comments. The tone of racism and intolerance is much more subtle. Think of the governments indiference to the Hurricane katrina victims and the disparity in education. Think of who is riding the bus, working in the fields or in sweat shops. It would be powerful and more authentic if you could capture racist attitude in the interaction between people.

Thanks for the comment Monica. I'm probably going to have to reshoot I'll definitely take some of your ideas into consideration.

I don't know if you have to capture this concept in the studio. If you do, then I think it will be even more challenging to caputre the mindset of racism. Another portrayal of modern raicism is the way we segregate ourselves in chruches. You could contrast the black congregation & white congregation. What about contrasting kids and adults -- kids interacting and playing together and adults with this invisble wall. Or people walking by a homeless person and giving him some change without really acknowledging him. What about bi-racial couples -- they are still discriminated against. You could have someone sneering at a black woman with a white man...it happens in real life.

Wow I made a lot of typos in the comment above! I guess I should spell check my comments :)

I really like this picture, I love the expression he has on his face and the words really make it evident to hep tell what this picture is about and the meaning it carries. Definitely fits "Us and Them."

I find your imagery interesting and I can see what you were trying to accomplish. I actually really like the use of the banner that binds the man just like those words bind the peole who use them in intolerance.
